Summary:
Social Software and Web 2.0 is a ‘new technological’ concept for all educational organisations. The technological changes and new dimensions in education associated with social software and Web 2.0 have seen an entirely different educational paradigm being formed. Students are provided with more flexibility and a much richer learning environment. Student’s roles have changed from passive to interactive.

Social software – Ectoleaning.
I came across this Youtube Clip – This is EctoLearning which discusses the ‘downloadable’ Social Software Ectolearning.
It states that it provides many opportunities for learners. It enables learners and instructors to connect and form groups in ways that enhance interactivity. It encourages exploration and facilitates collaboration. It goes on to say that classrooms who use Ectolearning become more personal and more interactive because students have more channels to ask and answer questions in an environment that encourages social networking. Ectolearning also has a learning management system (LMS) which allows instructors to manage observe and grade students. I am wondering for those who are familar with Illuminate is this similar?

A personal learning environment allows the learner to link their educational needs around their environment. It means that you can choose when to work and when to study. It allows you to choose when to include others in your learning. It allows you to enjoy a personal or social interchange of ideas – or remain as an individual. A personal learning environment can adapt to change, it moves with you – it is not left behind, nor are you, when you go away. It can include your identity – it can show your characteristics or personality. A personal learning environment allows you to gather the like minded. It keeps you in touch – always. A personal learning environment allows you to publish – to publicise – to become a voice. This environment can be a set to your needs – your skills and experiences. It is happening – we are part of it.
Web 2.0 is a set of principles and practices that tie together the multitude of sites that show and demonstrate the power of the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 relies on participation rather than software – the more people that use the site the better it gets. Wikipedia is an example of participation – a collective harnessing of the intelligence of the users. It is a virtual collection of information and more so an experimentation in trust and unison to impart knowledge.
